For the last 20 years I have been collecting cookbooks from all over the country and now have over three hundred cookbooks in my collection. My collection is very eclectic. I have everything from cookbooks by Ina Garten to old church cookbooks and yellowed hand-written recipes. One reason I have decided to post the retro recipe of the day is because the economy is getting so bad. Many of these recipes were handed down to me by my Grandma Gewerth and were handed down to her by her mother. My Grandmother successfully survived the great depression and was a great role model to me when it comes to frugality. To this day a wave of guilt rushes over me when I walk past a discarded penny laying in the street. Her voice still echoes through my head saying “Kelly you might need that penny some day.” Therefore I am compelled to pick it up.
I have been accused of being cheap by some. Personally I take that as a compliment! I remember my grandma standing by the kitchen sink pulling every bit of chicken off the bone to make Pot Pies. When she was done doing that she would throw the carcass in to her big turquoise club roasting pan with carrots, onions and celery to make a delicious broth. These are some on my fondest memories.
So Grandma Lucille as I sit and post the “Retro Recipe of the Day” I will always think of you ♥
